An upmarket charabanc?

by loiswakeman @ 03 May. 2007 - 14:54:24

On BBC's Working Lunch today, the quaintly-named Blaire Palmer was introduced as an author of self-help books and "an executive coach" . Funny that - sometimes they overtake me on the motorway when I am pootling along in my old banger. Who'd have thought they could write books as well as transport well-dressed senior citizens on luxury outings?

Visit Ms Palmer's web site for a real jargonfest. Read it and snigger - or possibly be empowered and creativised. (Do you think we should tell her that someone has scribbled on it?)

this is not just scribbling, this is executive coach scribbling.
i once had a job with 'executive' in the title.
it was probably the most junior position i held.

i always fancied being Head of Strategy (Global) or something like that.

thank you for the chance to snigger (a lot)!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! And I can just imagine you huskily intoning the M&S mantra too - must go and drink some cold water to calm down ;-)

I've not looked at the link but I'm guessing that she must be American. I look at the blurb on books written by such people and chuckle at the absurb claims that are usually made.

I am ashamed to say she is all too English. By eschewing her site, you will miss drivel like:

"Vision. Passion. And the ability to inspire

"These are qualities that every leader needs. Blaire Palmer can help you develop them. Working on a one-to-one basis and in small groups, Blaire creates an environment in which creativity and strategic thinking can flourish

"Empowered to ‘think big’, clients learn to anticipate and overcome business challenges in wholly original, competitive and innovative ways. Intuitive, engaging and fun too, Blaire’s work helps you to harness the power of transformation."

Blaire witch...

In that case I will take a look. I guess that she's learnt from American coaches, of which there are plenty!

At the museum where I work those of us who deliver the educational workshops to the school children are for the most part the fifty-something products of girls' grammar schools who have side-stepped out of teaching. Our 'boss' (and I use the inverted commas advisedly) often causes us a certain amusement with her executive speak and team-building activities. What, we ask, is wrong with a nice cup of tea and a chat if we want to get closer to our colleagues?

My goodness Lois I have met a like minded spirit here in the hatred of pretentious jargon, and particularly pretentious, allegedly, motivating jargon.

Just imagine Churchill's 'We will fight them on the Beaches' speech written by one of todays management gurus.
Sadly, this pernicious nonsense is everywhere and ye achieves nothing apart from creating more opportunities for the fools that buy into it.

The whole web site, in a nutshell, says pay Blaire Palmer shedloads of (sometimes taxpayers) money to stand in front of your staff wasting their time blathering, and generally trying to put a squib up their (according to you) lazy arses!
I can tell you it would be more cost effective to pay them a bit more, tell them more precisely what you want of them, and occasionally offer a morsel of praise!

Ooops! When I say "you", I don't of course mean YOU Lois. I mean whatever boss is contemplating using Blaire Palmer's dubious services.

Don't panic - that is how I read it anyway...
