The names that staplers call themselves

by loiswakeman @ 11 Jul. 2007 - 14:50:51

With thanks to Gary Larson, whose Far Side cartoon "The names that dogs call themselves" inspired this post.

We have been managing with the same box of 5000 desk staples for about the past 10 years, so the purchase of a new box was quite an occasion (and all for 99p!). But before I binned it, I read the old carton, which yielded this legend:

"To fit Cartwright Brice 10-86 stapling machines. Also Rexel stapling machines: Jupiter, Taurus, Saturn, Matador, Sirius, Meteor, Miniplier, Cosmos, Long Arm 5616, Comet, Jaguar and Gazelle".

I had no idea that a humble desk accessory could have dreams of the stars or the veldt! Poor old double-barrelled CB though - no imagination there.

What are your favourite names for inanimate objects?

Wishful thinking, huh?

In my first job there was this lovely Indian man who seemed to spend all day dis-assembling and then re-assembling a rather magnificent stapler. Being young I never had the courage to ask him why or what his job was meant to be. No one else seemed to take any notice of it. I bet he had a pet name for his stapler.

Sounds like it might be a 'Majestic', or an 'Acme', perhaps? Or even a 'Paragon'?

To think, someone is paid to think up these names. I recently had to choose paint colours for the new house these had very bizarre names.

I still have an half-used box of staples that I 'borrowed' from work before my daugher was born (she's 13 in August!?)

My nephew tells me that when he was looking for paint recently he came across the fetchingly named 'seasick green'.
