Extol and exhort

by loiswakeman @ 17 Mar. 2008 - 15:24:00

First in a series of words that often get mistaken.

Heard on The Food Programme (Radio 4) yesterday:

"We are being extolled to sprinkle salt on our food" - Simon Parkes

No we aren't - we are being exhorted. You extol the virtues of something you like; you exhort people to do something.

Nicely put! :) Isn't it a pity the way some people manage to mangle the language?

Maybe he meant that we are being extorted to sprinkle salt on our food?

Oh dear, it makes you wonder where they're coming from. Perhaps it was a senior moment.

I remember one food programme comentator exhorting people in the north of Scotland to use local fresh fruits instead of frozen, at a time of year that some of the soft fruits he referred to, would not be ready in that region! Other items would not grow there anyway. Blasted ignorance!

The problem is, such 'all-knowing' statements are made, and many people don't know any better, either, they swallow it.

Sometimes I feel I am fighting a losing battle against the forces of wilful ignorance and diminished vocabulary*.

* Ed: wots one of those then, eh?

When the synapses are re-charged you will,no doubt, be able pull together all forces of clarity and tell all and us too! ;)
